Girl with a Pearl Earring is my hand-painted oil study of Johannes Vermeer’s famous portrait.
Vermeer is one of my favourite historical painters, and I created this piece by studying the original closely while working through the painting myself in oils.
I was particularly interested in imagining how the colours may have appeared when the original was newly painted, before centuries of ageing and changes to the pigments. I therefore chose deeper, richer colours in my interpretation.
Painting studies like this allows me to explore the techniques, light and colour used by artists I admire.
