Painter of colourful stories, nostalgic places and imagined worlds

I am a Scottish oil painter based in Aberdeen. My paintings are inspired by Scotland, nostalgia, literature, city life and the small details that make a place feel memorable.

I have always been drawn to paintings that feel like somewhere you could step into. A winding road, an old cottage, a rainy street, a quiet winter evening or a scene inspired by a familiar story can all become the beginning of a painting.

Painting as Storytelling

For me, painting is about more than recording what a place looks like.

I like to create scenes that suggest a story — an artist working beside a cottage, a figure walking through a rainy street, people gathering beneath warm windows, or a road disappearing into the distance.

Some of my paintings are based on real places, while others are imagined from memories, ideas and fragments of places I have seen. I often prefer the imagined scenes because they can feel strangely familiar without belonging to one particular location.

That sense of discovery is important to me. I like viewers to notice a new detail each time they look at a painting.

Scotland, Colour and Nostalgia

Scotland is a constant source of inspiration in my work.

Highland cottages, lochs, sheep, rolling hills, changing skies and old stone walls appear throughout my paintings, but I do not always try to reproduce the landscape exactly as it exists.

Instead, I often exaggerate colour, simplify shapes and allow memory and imagination to influence the scene.

Colour is especially important to me. Even when the subject is quiet or nostalgic, I want the painting to feel uplifting.

Original Paintings

Original painting remains at the heart of what I do.

Each original is painted in oils on canvas and is a one-of-a-kind artwork. Every painting is signed and carefully packaged for delivery, with tracking provided.

My paintings have found homes with collectors in the UK and overseas, and one of the most rewarding parts of being an artist is knowing that something created in my Aberdeen studio has become part of somebody else's home.

From the Studio

I have spent many years developing my own style rather than trying to fit neatly into one category.

Some paintings are colourful and naïve, some more atmospheric and nostalgic, and others more traditional in their treatment of landscape and light.

What connects them is my love of storytelling and the idea that art should create a feeling.

I want someone looking at one of my paintings to pause, notice another small detail, and perhaps imagine what might be happening just beyond the edge of the canvas.
