The Music Lesson is my hand-painted oil study of Johannes Vermeer’s famous interior scene.
I painted this piece as a way of studying Vermeer’s remarkable use of light, colour and perspective, particularly the quiet atmosphere he created within his interiors.
I used ultramarine blue throughout the painting, including within the floor, following the way Vermeer used blue pigments across different areas of the original work.
Recreating paintings by the old masters is something I enjoy because it allows me to study their techniques closely while working through the painting myself in oils.
