Venice of Canaletto is an original Venice oil painting inspired by the work of the great Venetian painter Canaletto.
Venice is one of my favourite cities to paint, and for this piece I wanted to explore the atmosphere and architectural detail associated with Canaletto’s famous views of the city.
Rather than make an exact copy, I rearranged some of the boats and changed the clouds to create my own interpretation of the scene.
I also tried to imagine how the colours in Canaletto’s original painting may have appeared when it was first painted, before centuries of ageing and fading altered its appearance.
