Degas and the Ballerinas is an original oil painting inspired by Edgar Degas and his famous studies of ballet dancers.
Rather than recreate one of his existing works, I imagined Degas himself attending a dance class surrounded by some of the ballerinas and poses associated with his paintings, including the pink dancers.
Degas painted dancers repeatedly throughout his career, often concentrating on rehearsals and everyday moments behind the performance. That quieter side of ballet was what interested me when creating this scene.
