Oliver Twist is an original Dickens-inspired oil painting featuring Oliver and the Artful Dodger in a scene inspired by Charles Dickens’s famous novel.
Dickens is one of my favourite authors, and I have returned to his characters and stories several times in my paintings.
For this piece I wanted to imagine Oliver and the Artful Dodger as part of a believable Victorian scene rather than simply paint portraits of the characters. The setting, figures and atmosphere all help create the feeling of stepping into Dickens’s London.
I particularly enjoy his stories because they contain such memorable characters and vivid descriptions of nineteenth-century life.
