Canaletto: The Painter of Venice is an original Venice oil painting imagining the celebrated artist preparing to paint beside one of the city’s canals.
I pictured Canaletto standing with his palette and brush in hand, studying the elegant architecture, gondolas and distant church domes before making the first mark on his blank canvas.
What interested me was the quiet moment just before the painting begins — surrounded by Venice but still deciding how to turn what he sees into a work of art.
I enjoy creating paintings inspired by historical artists because they allow me to imagine the person behind the famous pictures rather than simply recreate their work.
